Will you ever walk alone? Fortnite concerns Liverpool CEO

Stop me if you have heard this before – a person in their 60s worried about Fortnite and what millennials are doing. Liverpool CEO Peter Moore, however, has a different reason than most to be concerned.
The head of the legendary English football club struck a worried tone in an interview with Arabian Business, stating that he is worried that it might be difficult to engage younger people in football.
“Ninety minutes is a long time for a millennial male to sit down on a couch,” Moore said. “When I look at viewing and attendance figures of millennial males, I’m concerned as a chief executive of a football club that relies on the next generation of fans coming through. We are an industry that needs to harness technology to make sure we don’t miss an entire generation of young people growing up that don’t have that love for football.”
The Liverpool Executive, who has experience in the digital world from previous terms at Microsoft, Sega of America and EA Sports, specifically named Fortnite as a competitor for young people’s time, saying:
“There’s so much pressure on time now and only 24 hours in a day… there are only so many hours to play Fortnite.”
Moore stressed the need to effectively use technology to keep sports attractive for the younger audience, for example with shorter “packages” of sixty to ninety seconds.
Liverpool is doing well so far, claiming to have over hundreds of million fans worldwide. With nearly 500 million social media interactions in 2018 – second highest in England and one of the top worldwide – it is a titan online as well. If Peter Moore is worried about Fortnite being a competitor for their time, it speaks volumes about the impact Epic Games’ superhit has on millennials.
